Learning to swim isn't just fun, it's also a fantastic skill that will help keep your child safe around water. With baby swim classes becoming more popular, how do you know when is the right time to teach your bub to swim? Read on for our helpful tips or get in touch with us to book!
While babies can go in water as soon as they're born, unlike adults, they're unable to regulate their body temperature and can quickly get cold. They're also more susceptible to infection, so we recommend you don't take your newborn swimming. You can easily start getting them used to the water at home, by holding them in the bath as they float and allowing them to enjoy the feeling of the water on their skin.
It's generally recommended you wait until your baby is eight weeks old before taking them to the pool for the first time. This will help keep them safe and allow them to adjust more easily to the water. Your baby does not need to be immunised before they go in the pool. When taking your baby to the pool at this age, ensure you only keep them in the water for about ten minutes and wrap them in a towel if they start shivering.
At SwimCare Swim School, we can begin teaching your baby to swim when they reach three months old.
Babies under six months old are still unable to regulate body temperature as readily as adults. If you're taking your baby to the pool, it's important the water is heated to about 32° C to ensure they stay warm. This is a great time to start teaching your baby swimming skills, as their concept of fear begins to develop at around 8 months of age.
You still need to be aware of how long your baby stays in the water. Babies under 12 months shouldn't stay more than 30 minutes in the pool.
Your baby will need specific swim nappies; these prevent leaks and don’t retain water. On top of this, they should wear a thermal wet suit or baby wrap which are available for all ages. All you will need is whatever swimming costume or bikini you feel you will be most comfortable in.
