5 Hydration Tips For Kids To Avoid Cramps In The Pool

SwimCare Swim School • Aug 29, 2024

Ever noticed your child experiencing cramps during a swim? It can be frustrating and painful, not to mention disruptive to their progress in swimming lessons. One of the best ways to prevent cramps is by keeping your child properly hydrated. But how can you ensure they’re drinking enough without making it a chore? Here are five simple hydration tips to keep your little swimmer’s muscles healthy in the pool.

1. Start Hydrating Early

Hydration doesn’t begin at the pool; it starts long before your child steps in the water. Encourage your kids to drink water regularly throughout the day, especially on swimming lesson days. A good rule of thumb is to start the day with a glass of water to jumpstart their hydration. This habit ensures they aren’t entering the pool dehydrated, which is a common cause of cramps.

2. Make Water Fun & Accessible

Kids are more likely to drink water if it’s readily available and appealing. Try using a fun water bottle with their favourite characters or colours and ensure it’s always within reach. You can also infuse water with slices of fruits like oranges or strawberries to add a splash of flavour without added sugar. Kids are more inclined to stay hydrated when water is fun and easy to drink.

3. Include Hydrating Foods In Their Diet

Not all hydration comes from a glass of water. Many fruits and vegetables are packed with water and essential nutrients that can help keep your child hydrated. Foods like watermelon, cucumbers and oranges are hydrating and provide essential electrolytes to prevent cramps. Incorporating these into your child’s snacks or meals, especially before a swim, can be a tasty way to boost hydration.

4. Monitor Signs Of Dehydration

Knowing the signs of dehydration can help you act quickly before it leads to cramps. Common symptoms include dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, or less frequent urination. If your child is showing any of these signs, it’s important to encourage them to drink water immediately.

5. Set A Routine For Pre & Post-Swim Hydration

A consistent routine can help your child get used to drinking water at key times. Encourage them to drink a glass of water about 30 minutes before swimming to ensure they’re hydrated as they enter the pool. After the swim, have another glass ready to help replenish any fluids lost during the lesson.
